The work of artist Magali Koenig refers to nostalgia, of a past where televisions had not yet been replaced by computers, tablets or smartphones. Crossing continents for over thirty years, Koenig has been casting her gaze on everyday life by capturing sounds, smells and objects. She now offers a series of images where the small screen is the protagonist. In most cases, the television set is turned on and appears like a sacred object on an altar table. If the human being is not there, his imprint is obvious: the objects, the decoration and the switched on television are all clues to his presence. From Moscow to Italy to Pakistan, Koenig manages to capture the personality of each environment in which the televisions are located. The interest of this series lies in the connection that Koenig establishes between the screen of the camera and that of the television. By creating a sort of mise en abyme, she manages to create poetic scenes of great technicality in which she operates a nesting of frames: the camera encloses the space of the television set, which in turn encloses a certain distant reality. Koenig’s photographs show the extent to which the small screen defines our habits and creates identities around a show at a specific time.
