Alberto Bernardoni

ITALY

Alberto Bernardoni was born in 1941 in Lugano (Italy). Since his youth, he accompanies his professional activity to his artistic tastes. Under the influence of John Berger and James Hillman, he developed a passion for photography.

1969 marks a turning point, it is the year of his first great African journey, from Switzerland to Timbuktu, passing through two crossings of the Sahara then still devoid of hard tracks.

Then followed many journeys, most of them alone, often adventurous, from which he drew the images for the book and the exhibition “In Eden” as well as the photogravures of “Africa Dreaming”.

Africa has been a passion, but his photography and aesthetic draw inspiration from multiple sources, from landscapes to architecture, from wildlife to the human condition.

He is married and lives between Lugano and Arles.

Sur

Sur

The images of Alberto Bernardoni exhibited at Cadaqués 2022 are part of a project, still vague although accelerating, entitled “Sur”.

Sud in Italian is written “Sud” and not “Sur”. Perhaps in memory of Eduardo Arroyo, his brotherly friend whom he met at the beginning of his exile. But maybe not. It is the Mediterranean South for sure, cynical, cruel and passionate, like a cosmos of lost illusions.

The South of masquerades and trompe-l'oeil, we surprise him at the Iles Sanguinaires, on a Sicilian volcanic beach, in front of a mountain of salt in the Camargue, or even in a Roman ruin in the Tunisian desert. These are cursed places, places of pleasure or forgotten places that treacherous currents bring to the surface.
