Christopher Barraja

FRANCE

Christopher Barraja is a photographer and visual artist born in 1993, known for his work exploring themes of identity and memory. Originally from the south of France, he draws inspiration from the Mediterranean landscapes and culture of this region, which imbue his work with an atmosphere that is both intimate and poetic.

He studied architecture before turning to photography after suffering a stroke at 20, which sharpened his perception of the invisible. Fascinated by fashion photography during an exchange in New York, he now blends this discipline with his artistic practice. Christopher Barraja quickly caught the attention of the contemporary art scene with his photographic series that blend reality and fiction. His work is distinguished by a subtle use of natural light and a keen attention to detail, creating images that oscillate between documentary and the dreamlike.

Of Chlorine and Rosé

“De chlore et de rosé” presents five summers of euphoria spent on the French Riviera. Images of carefreeness and indolence pass by with a strange scent. Drenched in a scorching sun, the gaze wavers between voyeurism and obsession. Everything becomes saturated - colors, sounds, smells. But something is off. These are perpetual vacations where, despite the endless horizon, one feels suffocated under the weight of anticipation. It’s like sinking underwater as the pressure increases, the eardrums buckle, and eventually burst. It’s a silent warning of events to come, both personal and on a much larger scale. Time seems to freeze.
We are at that place where the mountains violently meet the sea, and where freedivers faint from lack of air.
