Elliott Erwitt
UNITED STATES
Sarcastic and tender at the same time, Elliott Erwitt stands amongst the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Born in Paris in 1928, he spent his childhood in Milan before returning to the French capital when he was 10 years old. In 1939, his parents, who were Russian immigrants, moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles. There, Elliott Erwitt attended Hollywood Senior High School, while working in a photo lab where he developed "signed" prints for fans of movie stars. His artistic approach really began in the late 1940s, during stays in France and Italy. He then returned to New York and joined the American army. The year 1953 was decisive for the young photographer, who had just been discharged from the army: he met Edward Steichen and Robert Capa - whom he had met before his military service. The latter invited him to join Magnum Photos. From 1968 to 1970, Elliott Erwitt was even president of the prestigious agency.
